***

***

I came from nowhere

In order to slash

The wholeness of wonder

Into Soul and Flesh

The orb of the world

I dissect, splitting One

Into Song and Water,

Into Land and Tongue

I'll taste earthly bread;

At the end of my course

In radiance of words

I'll return to its source.

Oh, Abraham, I am

Your son and your prize,

And no, my time

Does not need sacrifice.

But full is my share

Of sorrows and toil

And then, from sweet here -

To no where

at all?

The Portrait

In my home there is not a soul.

Just a portrait on the wall.

Crawling across blind eyes

There are flies,

flies,

flies.

And I ask her: Is it nice

Under the glass, in paradise?

Flies climb down across the face,

The old woman softly says:

- And you, dear, at your sweet home,

Are you happy there alone?

***

Taken cruelly from me, snatched out,

Crying desperately for me nightly,

Childlike shoulders in a plain black gown, -

Best of gifts, recalled by the Almighty,

I implore you by the past, the present –

Do not follow me with deer-like eyes, please,

Sleep in peace, don’t sob in dreams unpleasant,

Oh, my angel, oh, my fawn, my eyas.

From Arabian deserts or Sumerian

Ancient rocks do you keep coming, merciless?

From which circle of memory Inferno

You arise in pride to make me breathless?

I don’t know, where does lie your Power,

I can't break the magic spell - it lingers,

Can't resign my right of being the owner

Of your breath, your dress, your hands, your fingers.

***

Sing me of a little tomtit’s

Quiet life across the sea…

From Winter Night by A.S. Pushkin

Tell me, little sister-soul,

Why’d you choose to slake your thirst

Not from Eden’s clear bowl

But from ours on Earth?

It is too unsafe abode –

Human body, frail and dark.

Were you not a little bold

When you settled in my heart?

Can’t a body get too tired,

Take a poison in the end?

You will leave me, as a migrant

Bird sets off for its homeland.

When you struggled, when you cared,

Following the earthly ways,

Seemed unbearable my share,

Was beyond my strength your weight.

But in those lands unknown,

When your flight’s already made,

Can’t it be? - You knock, and knock, and

Nobody unlocks the gate.

Sing, my soul, my little fiddler,

Of the earthly salt and pain,

Sing of how a lethal needle

Penetrates into the vein.

Sing, my sister, sing, the nomad,

Sing, my starving little tit,

Sing of deadly veil of snow

Shrouding a blooming sprig,

Of full-grown golden cereals

Beaten down by a hail…

Sing, don’t stop if sunlight ceases,

Sing, because you are a singer,

Sing, my soul, and you’ll be saved.

Eurydice *)

We are confined for lifetime

In bodies as in prison.

A soul is sick and tired

And does not see a reason

To be forever locked in

A skinny one-man cell

With eyes and ears openings

Like dormers size-of-cent.

It rises from the eyeholes

To where the clear sky calls

Along an icy-bright ray,

Where birds at their height play.

It hears from the windows

Cut through the living walls

The flute of hills and meadows,

The horn of seven falls.

A disembodied soul is

A sinner stripped of wear:

No acts and no goals,

No words and no care.

A riddle with no answer:

Who can come back again

When he’s already danced at

The stage of No-Men?

I'm dreaming of one soul

Of the different kind and fineness.

I see her all aglow,

She sways from hope to shyness.

As pure spirit's fire

She leaves with no trace,

And just a bunch of lilac

Across the table lays.

My child, don’t cry, don’t brood

On Eurydice*), complaining.

Keep bowling your brass hoop over

The plains, across the planet.

Keep running, child, and listen,

While hearing is still good,

For Earth to rustle, whistle

And sing beneath your foot.

Night Rain

In their fall, the raindrops headed

Toward the dark from circles of light.

We met for the first time; it happened

On that inclement rainy night.

The rainbows sparkled in the foggy

Light cones surrounding street lamps,

And they were telling you beforehand

Of the approaching romance,

They told of summer slowly leaving,

Of life that's strange and new – good Lord! –

However long you had been living,

Your life had been so very short!

And drops of rain as drops of tears

Were shining all over your face.

I didn't not know yet, my dear,

What crazy passions we'd embrace.

We cannot help each other now.

I hear your voice so far away.

And all night long the raindrops pound

Against the roof, as on that day.
