И льстится жатвою богатой;

Walsingham's Song from "Feast in Time of Plague"

When Winter, as a mighty lord,

Advances with its shaggy hord

Of blizzards on the people's bases,

We're not afraid, we meet these beasts

By crackle of flame in fireplaces,

By heat and joy of winter feasts.

And now the Plague, the dreadful queen,

Is waging war on human beings,

Enticed by loot, by lavish harvest.

It knocks at doors with graveyard spade,

And every day this knock is harder.

What can we do? Can we be saved?

As during Colds, let's do the best

To shut ourselves away from Pest!

Let's kindle lights, let's fill the glasses,

Let's drown minds in wine, let's make

The royal feast, and revel in dances,

Let's glorify the reign of Plague.

In bloody battles there is a bliss,

And on the brink of dark abyss,

Amidst the waves in stormy weather,

In raging gales, when life's at stake,

In sandstorms of a gloomy desert,

And in the breath of deadly Plague.

All threatening with wreck and death

Is fraught for mortals with no less

Than strange and wild ecstatic pleasure -

Perhaps, the pledge of endless life!

And blessed are those who had their measure

Of this ineffable delight.

And so, - we praise you, dreadful Plague,

We celebrate, we hold a wake,

We won't lose nerve when you do call us.

We drink the sparkling wine, we take

The sips of breath from lips like corals -

The maiden's breath, perhaps, full of Plague!

Life, the gift so idle and random,

Why 're you given to me at all?

Or, else, why must you abandon

Me, condemned to deadly call?

What cruel force has called me, raising

From nonentity to light,

Filled my soul with passion blazing,

Stirred with doubt my eager mind?..

Void's my brain, and drained's my spirit.

No goals for which to strive.

I am sick to death of hearing

The monotonous buzz of life.
